The name ‘brandy’ comes from the Dutch “branwijn”, which means “burnt wine.” Brandy is an spirit beverage distilled from wine or fermented fruit juice.
Typically distilled from wine, brandy is aged in old casks for a period of up to 2-3 years to achieve and alcohol volume of 40%. However, while some brandy are aged in wooden casks, others have caramel put into it to give it its brown colour, and some are still aged even after adding caramel.
Whisky is a spirit distilled from fermented grain mash. The main grain varieties used are in the production of whisky include wheat, rye, barley, and corn. The liquor is aged in wooden barrels after distillation. Whiskey is made all over the world with the most popular being Scotland, Ireland, Canada, & America.
Bourbon is whisky distilled in the United States of America. Its name comes from Bourbon County, Kentucky, from where it originated. Also aged in oak barrels, it is free from any artificial colouring or additives.
Cognac is French brandy which is made from special grapes that are grown in the specified region of Cognac (from where it gets its name) in France. It is distilled in pot stills and must be at least 40% proof. It has to meet certain legal requirements in production methods known as Appellation d’origine controlee.

Here’s a breakdown of the differences between these popular and delicious citrus fruits:
§ Oranges are second in size to the grapefruit. This citrus fruit has a thick skin, is round in shape, and has a tart flavor.
§ Mandarins are a type of orange and the overarching category that Tangerines, Clementines, and Satsumas fall into. They are generally smaller and sweeter than oranges, a little flatter in shape, and they and have a thinner, looser skin that makes them easier to peel.
A Tangerines are a specific type of mandarin orange. They are a bright orange color, slightly tougher skins, and their flavor is a little less sweet and a bit more tart.
B Clementines are the smallest type of mandarin orange. They are super sweet, seedless, and have red-orange skins that are smooth and shiny. The mandarins you see in grocery stores called Cuties and Sweeties are Clementines. They are easier to peel than tangerines, but not as easy to peel as Satsumas.
C Satsuma Mandarins are a specific type of mandarin orange, originating in Japan more than 700 years ago. They are a lighter orange, sweet, juicy, and seedless. They are also the easiest variety to peel. The most tender, easily damaged type of mandarin, Satsuma mandarin oranges are harder to find fresh in stores. Theyre in season Nov-Jan, I find at Whole Foods early Jan.

August 6 is Friendship Day!
Eating healthy and keeping friendships work together to promote health!
1/ Have you noticed a friend putting all their hours into one or two people (significant other) vs. balancing out many areas of their life, like their friends?
2/ Are women more prone to this than men (need to please greater?)?
3/ Do you believe if a friend was important to you BEFORE you met a significant other, they should be equally important AFTER? How would you want to be treated?
4/ Do you help or retreat from a friend going through a crisis? How would you want to be treated?
5/Why are people becoming less apt to foster friendships at work? Doesn't it all boil down to working together well? Button above talks about this.

I found a succinct article on whole grain bread on kidshealth.org:
Why is whole-grain bread healthier than white bread? (remember, this fits pancake mixes and other things that have whole grain):
Bread is made out of flour that comes from grain kernels — usually wheat. A grain kernel has three parts: the bran, the endosperm, and the germ (so called because it's the part of the kernel that germinates into a new plant).
Whole grains contain all parts of the grain kernel. But refined grains, like the flour used to make white bread, have had the fiber-dense bran and the nutrient-rich germ processed out, leaving only the starchy endosperm. Removing the bran and germ also removes key nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, healthy fats, protein, and fiber.
Some flour and bread manufacturers "enrich" their bread by adding extra vitamins back in. But it's still better to eat whole grains.
If you're buying packaged bread in the supermarket, be sure the label says "whole grain" or "whole wheat."
